8/24/2023 0 Comments Open arena vs quake live![]() You wouldn't get many patches for the game, you would most likely get very different suggestions about how much damage this and that should do and whether or not we need vehicles. Users in this context means gamers, not typical users (or even programmers) in an open source project. Quake3 has no more active maintainers, no ID, no OSP guys, no arqon, who consider the game or their mods their babies. Others do the testing, give input and suggestions, and some even look into the code and offer patches to solve a problem. ![]() the only reason QL is being tolerated/played right now is cause unlike q3 its receiving a steady stream of traffic / exposure of newbs to its website.Īll open source projects have one or few maintainers who consider the project their baby. what u gonna say widescreen? postprocessing / bloom? some random shit that hardly matters? someone could easily hack support for that into q3 if there was a demand for it so thats far from an "evolutionary improvement" and nothing about ql encourages competitive play at all. name one improvement over q3 that ql does better? i bet you cant cause this game is a fucking failure and has been from the start. if the q3 scene was still alive and poppin no one in their right minds would choose ql over q3. QL is still no where near as good as CPMA or OSP and add to the fact that we cant even play the maps that we grew to enjoy and love over the years. I cant see how anyone would consider this game an improvement over q3 lol u sounding like cooloutac right about now saying dumb shit like that. QL is a good evolutionary improvement over Q3 and vanilla Q3 version of CPMA. but even in an area fundamental to the experience like the map pool, ql is still far behind q3 (except maybe in duel). The centralized model wouldve worked if id did a competent job of addressing all these issues. i know theyre almost forgotten here on esr but what about the people who dont play vq3 or cpm? what about the defrag community? the uft community? folks who played whacky mods like excessive plus (which had a community of significant size btw). but to me one of the greatest reasons i loved q3 was the variety of experiences to be had. Ql is great if all u want to do is play a quick vq3 style duel/ctf/tdm/ca. not so much if we are still only catching up with what was state of the art in cpma from like 2 years ago.ĭoes the subscription model work for a dm game? yea sure if ur constantly adding features and content. constant development? yea sure if the rate of development was good. I agree with the theory of what ur saying. If QL shuts down, they won't really have a choice, but I think most people would probably move on at that point. I don't think anything could convince people to switch back, as the community has a general "you first" mentality, that leads to nothing ever getting done. The move was a mistake, because now the community is completely reliant on id, and id is proving to be incapable of handling the job. With all the fighting between the small differences that CPMA/VQ3 brought, you would have expected the general community to be even more upset with the changes in QL, but it turns out that most of them only hated on CPMA because of CPM. There was a lot of discussion over this before the game went live, and I think gillz had the best suggestion when he said that QL could be a great way to get new players into the game, while having the competitive/hardcore stick with Q3. I'm just saying, why did the quake community ever decide to start playing QL instead of Q3? Wasn't this a mistake? Shouldn't people go back to playing the more open game (OA>Q3>QL?)? If so, is there any practical way to transition the community? But with a setup like quake live, we are dependent on ID/whoever to fix whatever we complain about, and from what i read that's a highly unlikely prospect. And they have historically and would continue to fix 'problems', given the motivation + adequate community size was there. As in, you can easily upload a map or mod to your Q3 server, but you can't do that in QL because ID hosts all the servers on their computers.Īltho it may seem like a minor difference, isn't this difference in fact a huge deal? If Quake is an 'open' game, then there's really no problem that the community can not themselves fix. ![]() Isn't quake 3 the superior game? Isn't Open Arena even more superior than Q3? (i've been able to get CPMA etc working on open arena just fine).įrom what I can see, Quake live is basically the same game as Quake 3 except QL is a 'closed' game and Q3 is 'open'.
